We got paid anywhere from $100 to $150, which may not sound like much but we were just kids plus we’re talking 1968 dollars. We played at Michigan School for the Blind, where Stevie Wonder went. We played all the area high schools - Mason, Holt, Waverly, Owasso and O’Rafferty. We played all the hits at the time, “Light My Fire,” “Satisfaction,” “Purple Haze,” “My Back Pages,” “Well Respected Man” and more. That’s right, I was lead singer and front man for a rock ‘n’ roll cover band when I was 16 and we had gigs just about every weekend. There were a number of bands plying the Lansing pop/rock dance circuit in the mid-’60s - the Woolies, the Plagues, the Ones, the Frightened Trees and my band - the Harris Tweed. One good thing in my younger days, back in the late Pleistocene, was that all the local high schools held dances on the weekends and every one featured live music.
